Q: Do I need to clean my whirlpool bathtub? .......... YES:
The use of soaps, bubble bath additives, shampoos, conditioners etc in your whirlpool bath can all contribute to the build up of bath deposits inside the pipework. Substances such as Body oils, skin, soap scum, and general grime can be quite difficult to shift if it is allowed to build up over time. Any organic build up inside the pipelines can encourage the growth of bacteria, which if not treated may result in an unhygienic system and ugly black flecks being seen in the water.
The conditions inside the whirlpool pipework are warm and damp, whch is the ideal environment to harbour bacteria. It is vital therefore that the pipework is flushed out regularly with specialist whirlpool cleaning and sanitising products in order to help reduce any build up of bath deposits and minimse the growth of bacteria.

All whirlpool bathtubs have a small amount of residual water left in the pipes, minerals in the water are capable of calcifying around the insides of the pipes. This hard scale build up not only restricts water flow, but becomes a breading ground for bacteria. As the algae breaks off, you will see it in your bath water as ugly black flecks.
An even greater health risk comes from the germs and bacteria that are left from previous bathers. Fecal matter, cold and flu germs are basic household germs that can be controlled if properly cleaned.

Q: What can I do to limit the build up of bath deposits inside the pipework?
Avoid using bath additives that are oil based or contain lanolin, these substances can make the inside of the pipes sticky and thereofore increase the residue in the pipes. Try showering before using your whirlpool bath to remove makeup, body lotions, sunscreens etc. Avoid shampooing your hair. Make sure you use specialist whirlpool cleaning & sanitising products on a regular basis. NOTE: If polluted pipework is allowed to dry out over a long period of time, the residue can dry onto the pipes and be even more difficult to remove.
Q: I don't use my whirlpool system very often do I still have to clean it? .........YES,
Even if the whirlpool bath is used as a normal bath tub and the whirlpool isn't activated, the pipework will still get flooded with bath water, this means that soaps, bubble baths etc will leave a residue inside the pipework when the bath water is drained. If this build up is not removed it may encourage bacterial growth.
Q: Should I be worried about Legionnaires Disease in my Whirlpool bath?
A: We advise you read these Articles about Legionnaires
Article - Health Problems associated with Spa bathsLegionnaires' disease is most often contracted by inhaling mist from water sources such as showers, and cooling towers which are contaminated with Legionella pnuemophila bacteria, or other bacteria in the family Legionellaceae.
Legionnaires disease has been associated with Hot Tubs or Spa baths which are not drained after each use. A Whirlpool bath in your bathroom is designed to be drained and filled with fresh water with each use so the risks of legionnaires are minimised as there is no standing body of water. A stringent cleaning and sanitising regime will further minimise the risks of infection.
Q: I was told I could just circulate dishwasher detergents through my system to eliminate the black flecks. Do these methods work?
Detergents designed to clean dishes are not formulated to clean jetted whirlpool bathtubs.
Q: What is the difference between an Jacuzzi and a Whirlpool bath?
Nothing, Jacuzzi is a brand name for a type of whirlpool bath. Some people us the word Jacuzzi in reference to an outdoor Hot Tub or Spa
Q: What is the difference between a Whirlpool & an Air Spa?
Whirlpool System : A massaging and invigorating experience roduced when water is drawn from the bath and pumped back through a series of jets positioned around the side the bath.
Air Spas System: Creates a relaxing sensation from the touch of a button! Either discreet Air spa jets or tiny air holes in the base of the bath release streams of air bubbles from the bottom of the bath.
Q: How do I clean my Air Spa bath?
Pure-Spa Cleaning fluid is primarily designed for Whirlpool Systems although it may also be effective in Air Spa baths. (it may be worth consulting the manufacturer)
An Air Spa bath will either have a series of small air tubes connected at the base of the bath, or there will be a series of small pinprick holes in the bottom of the bath from which air bubbles will rise.
If you have an Air Spa system check that there is a blow out function to drive excess water from the pipes after use. This will help to keep the system clean as it should dry out the pipework after use.
When using the Cleaning fluid in a Air Spa bath take care not to leave the Air blower on for too long as the solution will foam up. We would suggest dosing the bath with cleaning fluid as directed on the bottle and letting it stand for some time before draining and rinsing as directed. Be sure to rinse the bath with fresh water and then activate the blower to dry out the system after use if this isn't automatic.
We would recommend using the sanitising tablets as normal in order to mimimise the growth of bacteria in the system.
